Healthier living; that’s how you start

Everyone gets that moment in their lives when you realize that you only get one body in this life and that you have to take good care of it. Then comes the moment that you enter ‘healthier living’ on Google and start looking for those tips. One of the oldest women in the world once said, when she was being interviewed… “If I had known that I would grow old, I would have taken better care of my body”.

I myself started to live a healthier life when I was on holiday in Italy a few years ago. Just 33 years old and already attributed to the group of overweight people. I mainly ate what I liked and moved when I felt like it. But after reading the book Body een lijfboek, I realized that I had to live healthier. My son was at that time just 2 years old and if I would continue like this, I wouldn’t be able to play soccer with him when I was 12 years old. I decided to start a healthier life and changed course. In this article I describe how I started a healthier life.

How I started to live healthier

Once I turned the button on, it wasn’t that hard anymore. I’m an information addict and I had a mission. Now all I had to do was find the reliable sources and it would only be a matter of time before I knew about the hat and the edge. Meanwhile, more than 15,000 people are following my health blog to learn from my experience. In any case, it started with reading dozens of scientific studies and following health blogs with a lot of authority. And now I know about the hat and the edge and I have tested and applied dozens of methods.

This is what I immediately changed in my first week:

I left cookies, sweets, snacks and soft drinks on the floor right away.
I ate less from “pack”, so a lot of fresh ingredients
I went more walking (not running, just walking)
The above three steps must be taken immediately if you want to live healthier… no doubt! Just do it! Your body does nothing with biscuits, sweets, snacks and soft drinks, except break them down and store them as fat. If you are hungry, your body asks for nutrients and not for empty filling. Do you really want something sweet? Then choose fresh fruit.

Food ‘out of a suit’ or ready-made meals are full of artificial ingredients and make your body sick. Eat mainly products that come from natural sources and have not been processed. Then you’re always in the right place. There’s a difference in that too, but in the end you’ve taken your first step.

Healthier living is directly linked to more exercise… don’t be put off, because you don’t have to become a top athlete! Just take the stairs more often, take a walk after dinner, and so on. These are small changes with an enormous impact on your health.

A few tips

Understand what you do/eat

Install MyFitnessPal on your phone. This app is free and can help you understand what you are eating. You enter your food and the activities you have done. At the end of the day, you will know whether you have received enough calories or whether you have ingested too much. The relationships between proteins, fats and carbohydrates are also interesting to monitor. A healthy ratio is 30% protein, 40% fat and 30% carbohydrates, where the carbohydrates have to be extracted from fruit and vegetables.

Eat according to the Paleo principle

The Paleo principle is a diet that is based on a diet that is as natural as possible. Our ancestors didn’t eat cruesli and didn’t drink a glass of Cola. This is the only ‘diet’ that is suitable for everyone… whether you want to lose weight or not. This diet adapts to your body’s needs. I would really recommend that you buy this book. If you read it, you get it… and you will benefit from it for the rest of your life.

Standard healthy dishes

We people love routines and I’m almost sure you have a fixed diet with dishes that you eat every week. The simplest thing you can do for a healthier life is to select 10 new ‘standard’ dishes to eat every week. Make sure you have at least 1 or 2 recipe books with healthy recipes, such as these and these.

Go for a walk

Of course you can start training for a marathon right away, but that’s not necessary… if it’s healthy at all. No, just walk. And the big advantage is that not only does it make you healthier, it also makes you happier and more relaxed. And stress is the biggest sickness-maker in the western world! It makes you fat, thin, sick, bald and even ugly. Take a walk at least once a week and leave running for what it is. Guaranteed result!
